Rep. Maloney Vows to Fight for a $15 Minimum Wage

Statement

"Anyone in this country who is a working a full-time job should be able to support themselves and their family -- period. In response to sustained public pressure, as well as economic forces, Amazon recently increased its minimum wage to $15. It's long past time for the federal government to do the same. It's been more than decade since we raised the minimum wage and low-income families are suffering because of it.

"The distance between the "haves' and the "have-nots' is becoming even greater thanks to the Republican Tax Scam but raising the minimum wage will help to combat that and move us toward an economy that works for everyone. The minimum wage should not be a poverty wage, it should be a living wage.

"Amazon's announcement isn't pure altruism, it's driven in part by the need to attract and retain workers in a hot economy. Let's hope that the economy stays hot and that other employers are forced to compete for those workers, driving wages up at other companies and in other industries.

"This must be a priority in the next Congress when Democrats take back the House. We're fighting for a better deal for all Americans, a congress that is for all the people, not the wealthiest few."
